NY Law Firm Helping WTC Volunteers and Their Families

Attorneys handling complex cancer cases and 9/11 lawsuits

Many September 11, 2001 heroes were volunteers, working amid the debris and smoke because they needed to be there, because they were needed. If you ask, most of them will likely tell you they would do it again without hesitation, even those whose monumental efforts have left them ill. The attorneys at Barasch McGarry Salzman & Penson were moved by the courage of so many volunteers in those early days and in the long months of cleanup that followed. From our offices just a few blocks from Ground Zero, we witnessed endless examples of heroism.

Those we help

Today, our lawyers provide powerful advocacy for the volunteers whose exposure to toxins in the dust and debris resulted in lung disease, cancer and other health problems. Our clients include:

  • Off-duty firefighters
  • Off-duty police officers
  • Off-duty emergency responders
  • City workers
  • Construction workers
  • Contractors
  • Clergy members
  • Business owners
  • Everyday workers
  • Students
  • Residents

We are particularly inspired by Sister Cindy Mahoney, who spent six months at the World Trade Center site blessing the remains and praying with bereaved families and workers. She died from lung disease in 2006 at the age of 54.

Breathing disorders covered by the Zadroga Act

The Zadroga Act provides medical and financial benefits to volunteers who performed rescue, recovery, demolition, debris cleanup or related support services in lower Manhattan and at the Staten Island landfill and the barge-loading piers. The earliest recognized post-9/11 illnesses involved the lungs. If you suffer from any of the following, you can file a Zadroga claim seeking free medical care and compensation:

  • Interstitial lung diseases (diseases that cause scarring of lung tissue)
  • Chronic respiratory disorder from fumes/vapors
  • Asthma
  • Reactive airways dysfunction syndrome (RADS)
  • WTC-exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Chronic cough syndrome
  • Upper airway hyperreactivity
  • Chronic rhinosinusitis
  • Chronic nasopharyngitis
  • Chronic laryngitis
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD)
  • Sleep apnea exacerbated by or related to any of these conditions

Since 2012, volunteers who have developed cancers caused by 9/11 can also receive assistance. The Victims Compensation Fund recognizes a WTC connection to 68 types of cancer.

Wherever you are across the country, our attorneys are here for you. You do not have to live in New York to obtain our help. We pursue cases on behalf of out-of-state responders and volunteers who have moved.

Volunteers can depend on our lawyers for sound counsel
