Still Time to Meet Deadlines for Filing 9/11 Claims

Deadline to register new claims with the Victim Compensation Fund is now 2 years from the date of a cancer diagnosis

The deadline for registering a new claim with the Victim Compensation Fund depends on the date when you knew, or reasonably should have known, of your 9/11-related cancer. Claimants have two years from the date of their diagnosis to file a claim. This date is normally the date that is on the pathology report that confirmed a claimant’s diagnosis of cancer.

For the next month, there is one exception to this 2 year deadline: “RARE CANCERS”

  • Claimants diagnosed with a Rare Cancer* before February 18, 2014 must register a claim with the Victim Compensation Fund by February 18, 2016
  • Responders diagnosed with a Rare Cancer* after February 18, 2014, like every other cancer, must register a claim within 2 years of the date of diagnosis

*Rare Cancers include Malignant neoplasms of the:

  • adrenal gland and other endocrine glands and related structures
  • anus and anal canal
  • bone and articular cartilage
  • breast among men
  • gallbladder and other parts of biliary tract
  • meninges, brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, and other parts of central nervous system
  • pancreas
  • penis and testis
  • placenta
  • small intestine
  • thymus
  • vulva, vagina, and cervix uteri (invasive only)
  • Malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm, including carcinoid tumors
